The crop residue conundrum: Maintaining long-term soil organic carbon stocks while reinforcing the bioeconomy, compatible endeavors?

چکیده
Crop residues are a key bulk feedstock for supplying renewable carbon bioenergy production and the broader bioeconomy without compromising food security. However, it is frequently advised to harvest no more than half of this potential ensure preservation soil organic (SOC) stocks. In study, we challenge recommendation demonstrate that crop residue allowing maintain long-term SOC stocks spatially differentiated strongly dependent upon conversion pathway which intended. We assessed interaction between residues' usage maintenance over 100 years by considering coproduct return soils from five pathways: pyrolysis, gasification, hydrothermal liquefaction, anaerobic digestion, lignocellulosic ethanol production. To compare changes these scenarios against reference where unharvested, developed novel framework, applicable any site or region, coupling model includes recalcitrant matter deriving calculation module. The adapted considers recalcitrance degradation each coproduct, while module determines share ending in coproducts. framework was tested applied with high spatial resolution (>60,000 simulation units) context French croplands period 2020–2120, state-of-the-art sensitivity analyses. case study results revealed, among others, an additional equivalent 71–225 PJ (pathway-dependent) could be available decreases, compared applying stringent removal limit 31.5%.

Spatial distribution of soil organic carbon stocks in France
Soil organic carbon plays a major role in the global carbon budget, and can act as a source or a sink of atmospheric carbon, thereby possibly influencing the course of climate change. Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks are now taken into account in international negotiations regarding climate change. Consequently, developing sampling schemes and models for estimating the spatial distri...
متن کاملEnhanced top soil carbon stocks under organic farming.
It has been suggested that conversion to organic farming contributes to soil carbon sequestration, but until now a comprehensive quantitative assessment has been lacking. Therefore, datasets from 74 studies from pairwise comparisons of organic vs. nonorganic farming systems were subjected to metaanalysis to identify differences in soil organic carbon (SOC). We found significant differences and ...
متن کاملSoil Carbon and Nitrogen Fractions and Crop Yields Affected by Residue Placement and Crop Types
Soil labile C and N fractions can change rapidly in response to management practices compared to non-labile fractions. High variability in soil properties in the field, however, results in nonresponse to management practices on these parameters. We evaluated the effects of residue placement (surface application [or simulated no-tillage] and incorporation into the soil [or simulated conventional...
متن کاملLong-term influence of biochar on native organic carbon mineralisation in a low-carbon clayey soil
Biochar can influence native soil organic carbon (SOC) mineralisation through "priming effects". However, the long-term direction, persistence and extent of SOC priming by biochar remain uncertain. Using natural (13)C abundance and under controlled laboratory conditions, we show that biochar-stimulated SOC mineralisation ("positive priming") caused a loss of 4 to 44 mg C g(-1) SOC over 2.3 year...
